COAL OR CANDY? A 2024 XMAS!

The Heights Theater’s wonderful (and woeful) holiday tradition continues! This year, we’re bringing back some classics (IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE and MIRACLE ON 34th STREET), some coal-dark “classics” (MOMMIE DEAREST and BRAZIL) and some that are just plain fun (LAUREL & HARDY and LA LA LAND). Also, Ingmar Bergman. Yeah, Ingmar Bergman, because that’s how we roll. Xmas has never been more truly Xmas-y than at the Heights Theater in 2024!
MONDAY DECEMBER 16 | 7:00 PM

FANNY AND ALEXANDER

1982 | D: INGMAR BERGMAN BERTIL GUVE, PERNILLA ALLWIN ALL SEATS $12.00 In Swedish with English Subtitles.
The Ekdahls are a large, boisterous family who run a local theater, full of love, imagination, and admiration for one another. But when father dies suddenly from a stroke, mother remarries a local widower, the Bishop Vergérus, whose only goal in life seems to be to instill a brutal, harsh discipline on this family. Bergman’s raw and intense film is also a lush celebration of family life and triumph over adversity and is one of the most unheralded holiday films ever made. Nominated for six Oscars, it won four, a rarity at the time for a foreign language film.
DCP - Janus Films.

BRAZIL (director's cut)

1985 | D: TERRY GILLIAM JONATHAN PRYCE, ROBERT DeNIRO, KIM GREIST ALL SEATS $12.00
Sam Lowry (Jonathan Pryce) is a low-level bureaucrat who dreams of soaring in the clouds above the futuristic, polluted, hyper-consumerist England in which he lives. When he gets caught up in a glitch that results in the state-sponsored death of an innocent man during the Christmas season, Lowry finds himself tumbling down a dystopian rabbit-hole from which he cannot emerge. From the mind of Monty Python’s Terry Gilliam comes one of the most imaginative science-fiction films ever, at once a sweeping indictment of big government and foolhardy capitulation and a brilliant tale of innocence.
DCP - Universal Pictures.

Laurel & Hardy are mousetrap salesmen who travel to Switzerland for the simple reason that because that country has tons of cheese, it stands to reason there must be tons of mice. Ergo, mousetrap fortune. Spectacularly, they fail. Hilariously, they fail. With the short film “Big Business” this screening could really be called our “ Xmas Laurel & Hardy Festival” Sure to sell out, and sure delight audiences from 9 to 90.

MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET

1947 | D: GEORGE SEATON MAUREEN O'HARA, JOHN PAYNE, EDMUND GWENN, NATALIE WOOD. ALL SEATS $12.00
A single mom, a depressed child, a drunken Santa and a city full of cynical souls—this should be the bleakest Xmas movie ever. But MIRACLE ON 34th STREET is itself a cinematic miracle, as sweet a holiday confection as Hollywood ever produced. When a group of harried but good-hearted New Yorkers run headlong into a very real Santa Claus, you’ll be convinced yourself, in this complicated holiday picture that touches on themes of divorce, faith, and even capitalism. "Miracle" is both coal and candy in abundance. Winner of 3 Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actor for Edmund Gwenn, the cinematic Kris Kringle against which all others are compared.
DCP - Walt Disney Pictures.
