A Russian nesting doll of cryptic narrative strands and unresolvable mysteries, INLAND EMPIRE is Lynch at his most labyrinthine. At its core is the story of a Hollywood actress (Laura Dern) whose identity becomes unmoored as she stars in a supposedly cursed production—hence the mysterious tagline, “A woman in trouble.” But, as usual, a web of riddles and enigmas spins out from there. Working for the first time without a finished screenplay and with a handheld Sony camcorder, Lynch seems liberated to concoct an especially dense and baffling dream world. But that doesn’t mean INLAND EMPIRE is a difficult slog; far from it, as every scene and image is ravishing in its own way. Unless you count TWIN PEAKS: THE RETURN as an 18-hour movie, INLAND EMPIRE was Lynch’s final feature film—and a fitting coda for perhaps the most dazzling artist in the history of American cinema.
