Wilder's poison-pen letter to Hollywood is as cynical a comedy, and as funny a noir, as was ever committed to celluloid. When down-on-his-luck screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden) accidentally finds himself at the decrepit mansion of aging silent film queen Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson, in an iconic performance), he finds himself plunged into a world of despair and betrayal.
