Lynch’s first feature is one of most striking directorial debuts in American film history, an ethereal, highly personal vision pitched somewhere between dream and nightmare. Henry Spencer (Jack Nance) lives in an industrial wasteland; his girlfriend Mary (Charlotte Stewart) gives birth to their child, which may or may not be human—and which Henry tries to care for despite his apparent fear of the creature. As with most Lynch movies, this plot synopsis hardly gives an impression of ERASERHEAD’s hypnotic power. As director, screenwriter, producer, editor, sound designer, and composer, Lynch meticulously molds every aspect of this staggering world, conveyed in glittering black-and-white by cinematographers Frederick Elmes and Herbert Cardwell.
Henry (John Nance) resides alone in a bleak apartment surrounded by industrial gloom. When he discovers that an earlier fling with Mary X (Charlotte Stewart) left her pregnant, he marries the expectant mother and has her move in with him. Things take a decidedly strange turn when the couple's baby turns out to be a bizarre lizard-like creature that won't stop wailing. Other characters, including a disfigured lady who lives inside a radiator, inhabit the building and add to Henry's troubles.
