The recent trilogy may be a more faithful adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novels, but Lynch’s DUNE is arguably the more fantastic and mind-boggling creation. Kyle MacLachlan (collaborating with Lynch for the first time) stars as Paul Atreides; he’s joined by a stellar cast including Brad Dourif, Sting, Jose Ferrer, Freddie Jones, Virginia Madsen, Max von Sydow, and many others, who populate a bizarre and visually astounding version of Arrakis. Considered a flop upon its release (and mostly disowned by Lynch himself), DUNE has become a celebrated cult classic, with a soundtrack by Toto and Brian Eno adding to its appeal.
In the year 10,191, the most precious substance in the universe is the spice Melange. The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel. The spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe, the vast desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune. Its native inhabitants, the Fremen, have long held a prophecy that a man would come, a messiah who would lead them to true freedom.
