Lynch’s 1997 fever dream (or “psychogenic fugue,” as he called it) is one of the director’s more challenging works—but also one of his most rewarding. It came at a crossroads in Lynch’s career, five years after his previous feature (TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME), and took his bold authorial vision in startling new directions. The first half of the film concerns a tense marriage between jazz saxophonist Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) and his wife Renee (Patricia Arquette); after a disturbing act of violence, the movie suddenly switches gears, as Fred is inexplicably replaced by a young mechanic (Balthazar Getty) mixed up with a violent gangster (Robert Loggia) and his gorgeous moll (Arquette again). A disorienting trip into the warped mind of a jealous, lustful, insecure man, LOST HIGHWAY is Lynch at his most complex and darkly captivating.
