Melo-Drama-Rama

Film Series

Coming November 9, 2026

Hosted by B Bottenfield and Blaine Redden

Mel-O-Drama-Rama is a monthly screening series celebrating insane passion, torrid romance, and delirious emotion. Though the term "melodrama" has carried derogatory connotations throughout history, often dismissed as excessive, overwrought "women's pictures", the melodramas of the classical Hollywood era are among the most vivid cinematic expressions of female desire and subjectivity to emerge under the restrictions of the Hays Code. They contain some of the most stunning images ever put to film, often soaked with queer or subversive subtext, and would go on to influence generations of celebrated auteurs. Prioritizing sensationalized emotion over characterization, and bombastic images over naturalism, Melodramas often arrive somewhere realer- closer to the actual experience of human emotion- than films striving for verisimilitude ever could. So come cry, sacrifice, yearn, fall in love, and fall apart and indulge in the intoxicating excess of melodrama, in one of the most beautiful movie palaces in the world- the historic Heights Theater.
